Paramount Plus: UEFA Champions League Case Study
Designing interactive features for soccer enthusiasts to fully enjoy the best soccer league in the world on their TV on Paramount Plus.
Opportunity to make Paramount Plus a worthy sports streaming app
Paramount Plus is not a dedicated sports streaming service so currently its live game streams only offer the viewer the ability to rewind a certain amount of time to rewatch some key plays.
Paramount has accumulated a good number of soccer leagues under its sports portfolio throughout the past years such as the best soccer league in the world, the UEFA Champions League (UCL) as well as…
-The women’s UEFA Champions League
-Italy’s top soccer league, the Serie A
-Europe’s second tier continental league, the UEFA Europa League
-Europe’s third tier continental league, the UEFA Conference League
-England’s second tier league, the EFL (English Football League)
-Women’s North American continental soccer tournaments (W Concacaf)
Paramount Plus has the rights to stream the UEFA Champions League, the Europa League, the Conference League and the women’s UEFA Champions League into the 2029-2030 season, allowing for development of an interactive experience for fans.
Market Research
In the United States there are three main streaming apps with interactive features dedicated to sports: ESPN, FOX Sports and DAZN.
Key Plays
Netflix, Peacock and HBO max are also strategically acquiring rights to stream sports and are also bringing many of their sports networks into their streaming services, allowing viewers to watch multiple sporting events at the same time.

Interviewing some fans
I quickly interviewed four soccer fans what features on the Paramount Plus app on the TV would make a soccer match more enjoyable.
I am always looking at my phone for the stats when I am watching any kind of sport live so having at least the basic stats on the TV screen would be a great feature.
I am a snacker so every time I get up to prepare a snack, a goal or two have already been scored or someone has been sent off the game. Having something like a catch up with key plays feature that you can always access would help me catch up and not have to wait for a random replay or the end of the game to rewatch the goals.

Match statistics
When I am watching the Champions League, I usually have a game on my phone and two playing simultaneously on my computer at work, especially during the final group stage games. A multi-view feature like peacock’s would be great.
Jimmy, 25
I am always looking at the live scores of all the other games being played at the same time and checking X for all the goal replays. A quick little scoreboard showing other live scores would be awesome.

Synthesis
Drawing inspiration from the features the sporting apps offer and the insights offered by the sports fans interviewed, I listed down the essential stats and features that would make an interactive experience enjoyable yet not intrusive while watching a soccer match.

Initial Ideation
Through some rough mockups, I played around with the hierarchy of each of the elements: the main stream, stats, key plays, live scores, and lineups.
Refined Mockups
I then refined two higher fidelity mockups to start setting which elements were more important and which were to occupy the most amount of space.
Taking into account that most matchdays will have eight live matches at one time (in exception for the last matchday of the group stage in which there will be 18 live matches at once!!!) I divided 8 sections for the live score section for every match.
Layout 1
Pros: Extra negative space gives a more clear hierarchy of interactive elements
Cons: The vertical scoreboards are a bit awkward and are harder to read from a TV screen from 10 feet away
Final Design Direction
I showed the interviewees the refined mockups and they liked the first layout since the hierarchy for all elements was clearer, therefore making the interaction easier to navigate with a D-pad controller.
The interviewees mentioned that the lineups were not a very important element that they needed to know throughout the entire game since they usually already know the lineups before the game and they are usually shown again during the game before the second half begins.
With these thoughts in mind, the lineups were not included in future iterations.
Refined Iterations
Layout 2
Pros: Scoreboards are easy to follow and read
The statistics section is more stylized and unique
There is space to put in information about the game stream
Cons: The scoreboards might need to be scaled down so there is more negative space in order to let the layout breathe
This is the layout most of the matchdays will look like with eight live games at once. Based on feedback from the interviewees, I then refined typography size and played around with the opacity of the inactive elements so the active element stands out.
Layout 1
Pros: Vertical scoreboards add some visual interest
Key plays section is easy to find
Cons: An extra added interaction within an interaction to access the lineups
Layout 2
Pros: Scoreboards are easy to read
Stats and lineups are always visible
Cons: Scoreboards break the grid system
Key plays section is hidden and not easily distinguished
Adding in visual elements to the previous layouts, the interface was much cleaner without the lineups section and the hierarchy was made clearer.

Interaction and Features
Goal markers in the video timeline makes it easy to watch goal replays without going to the Key Plays section.
Multiview
The key plays section self populates as important plays occur with a timestamp and play description. The stream goes back to the timestamp to replay the selected play.
The Live Games section not only serves as a Live scoreboard of the other live matches but also as a shortcut to the game streams.
Paramount released a multi-view feature in late 2025 exclusively for desktops. Therefore I designed a new interaction for a multi-view experience on TV’s where fans can choose the order in which the games are shown.
Fans can choose games in the order of their favorite first to their least favorite last with games already listed from most to least popular.
After choosing their games they can choose from three different aspect ratios: Equally sized quadrants, a primary game stream with three equally sized smaller streams, and a staggered layout with different sized game streams according to their order.
During the game, fans can navigate to the bottom of the streams to change the aspect ratio instantly without going back to the main Multiview page.
Fans can also choose which games to watch by navigating to the camera button which then directs them to all the live games with live scores and can either reduce or increase the number of streams or change the order completely.
